FAQ

What type of children’s writing do you deal with?

Picture books, educational material, junior fiction, nonfiction text or middle grade novels. I will consider YA if it’s at the younger end of the scale.

Does it matter where I live?

No! I’ve dealt with writers from around the globe. As long as you write in English, I can help you create something beautiful for your target audience.

Will you rewrite my work?

The job of a book editor is to shape and clarify your writing while respecting your unique voice. I might offer suggestions as to how something should be phrased, but I don’t write your book for you. I can, however, be engaged as a ghostwriter. I’m happy to chat about this option if you’re interested.

What qualifications do you have?

I hold a Graduate Certificate of Editing and Publishing, a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Diploma in Professional Children’s Writing. I am also an IPEd Accredited Editor (AE), which means you can feel completely confident in my abilities. To achieve accreditation, Australian and New Zealand editors must demonstrate their professional competence and understanding of editing standards, skills and knowledge. This is assessed by examination and the editor’s ongoing commitment to professional development.

Are you used to working with private clients?

Yes. I’ve helped plenty of clients just like you. You can read my testimonials here.

Will you help me get published?

I can certainly help you find a publisher that is a good fit for your work, but I cannot guarantee that you will be published. No editor can do that. However, a professionally edited manuscript is your best chance for success, as it helps you stand out from the piles of submissions that publishers receive every day.

I’m not an experienced writer. Can you still help?

I love helping new writers. Please don’t feel overwhelmed! Often the best place to start is with a manuscript assessment. Here I can give you an idea of your strengths and weaknesses, plus provide plenty of gentle guidance for improvement.

Is it okay if I want to self-publish?

Sure! Traditional or self-publishing goals are both wonderful. I work with both types of authors.

Do you provide sample edits?

I don’t do them for picture books – they just aren’t long enough to make it worthwhile. But I’m happy to do them for longer books if you’re interested. Please contact me to ask.

How much does children's book editing cost?

My rates are here.

What is your turnaround time?

I will return your work as quickly as possible – I know how hard it is to wait! However, I can be booked up at certain times of the year. I will give you a turnaround time when I provide a quote.

Can you tell me a bit more about yourself?

I live in a tiny town in Victoria, Australia, surrounded by breathtaking national park. I have kangaroos in my backyard, possums in my roof and blue fairywrens dancing in my garden. When I’m not at my desk, you can often find me baking carb-loaded treats, doing yoga or playing the cello very badly.
